Our History
The first burial in Oakwood Cemetery took place in 1812. Of the more than 16,000 people now laid to rest here, many are locally well known residents including Daniel Penfield, the founder of the Town of Penfield.
In 1889, the Oakwood Cemetery Association was incorporated and a board of trustees elected to oversee the day-to-day operation of these historic burial grounds.
Maintenance
A portion of the purchase price of each lot in our cemetery goes to continuous maintenance should the cemetery association cease to exist. The remaining portion is used for on-going expenses such as equipment, water (available throughout the cemetery) and utilities.
Our Mission
Oakwood Cemetery and Mausoleum, located along Baird and Whalen Roads in historic Penfield, New York, has acres of park-like features punctuated by towering oak and pine trees. With close proximity to major expressways, the cemetery’s superbly maintained grounds are easily accessible to all visitors. Our professional, full-time staff is available to assist you in choosing the perfect burial site.
Our Vision
More than a century ago, the original trustees of Oakwood Cemetery envisioned this burial ground becoming “One of the finest country cemeteries in Western New York.” Over the years, we have worked hard to fulfill that vision.
